Here is a sneak peek of our new project coming in Spring 2021!
The International Festival of Song and Chamber Music Society has had a wonderful December despite COVID. We have been able to continue our Winterreise project, recording the music just before the lockdown came into effect. We are extremely grateful for the continued financial support from all of our donors and from the Calgary Arts Development for another Resiliency Grant towards this stage of our project.
Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter Journey) is a timeless trip, and we would like to share a small film of our work over the last few weeks. I hope that this universal music will reach out to people in a dark time, a time where we need to connect together despite the necessity of separation. We are settling into an unknown winter, during the darkest days of the year. Our version of Die Winterreise is set in rural Alberta. I am grateful for the collaboration of one of Canada’s finest baritones, Brett Polegato and Dutch-Canadian artist Eveline Kolijn on this project, the participation of two very promising young pianists, Cindy Zhang and Jack Olszewski, as well as Artistic Co-Directors Charles Foreman and myself, Kathleen van Mourik. Recording engineer Trey Mills and videographer Stephen Lubig are our sound/video partners.
Eveline Kolijn has put together a short trailer of our upcoming film (release Spring 2021). We are currently in the process of putting together the sound recording with the video footage from the recording days, but in the meantime, this short gem captures the beauty of creating art during a very challenging time for the arts. Enjoy and Happy Holidays wherever you are!
